Site updates

Postby admin on Wed Sep 24, 2008 10:47 am

Hi,

I'd like to introduce myself, I'm Paul and I, along with Chris were the ones responsible for first bringing Reptilekeeper to the web. It's been a while since we made any changes or updates to the site and it's now long overdue.

Hopefully over the next few weeks we'll start to make some of these updates to make it a bigger and better place, encourage visitors new and old and run a few competitions with some great prizes (if you feel your company/shop could donate a prize in return for some advertising drop me a mail).

The first change necessary will be the updating of the forums, there's a new version available and it'll help when I integrate different areas of the site, including an updated 'For Sale' area which will include the ability to upload a picture with your advert.

After the forums have been updated, we'll be moving through all the other pages and updating whatever we can !

But, as this is a community based site, if you've got any ideas or requests, please post here so that we can review them and see what we can do to encourage more visitors to get involved and help others.

For those interested in advertising, we'll be making some slots available through out the site, again, if you are interested drop me a mail.

Thanks for reading, and, if you have any ideas let me know I'll see what we can do.

Paul

Hi there Paul, the update sounds good but I would like to offer the following suggestions:

Edit the word filter - it would be nice to be able to type 'cockroach' without having to resort to workarounds!

Move 'For Sale' section to the forums - IMHO it would be a good idea to move the classifieds to a sub-forum. This would enable better searching, better 'at-a-glance' perusal of what's on offer, plus you can easily post images. It might also encourage more people to use the forum.

More/updated care sheets - the care sheets linked from the front page are showing their age somewhat and we've got some very experienced people on here who I'm sure could add a few extra to what's there.

Tidy up the various fora - do we really need three memorial forums, surely the Reptile Memorial forum is enough? I also suggest (although I know this is a contentious issue from the last time I raised it) that the snake fora and beardie fora be merged into single forums. We get so few posts a week in each of the two main sections it seems pointless to spread the information about. If they are all contained in one forum it at least makes searching easier. It has the added benefit of making the forum look a bit busier ;) Some of the others could also be merged but I feel these are the most important ones.

Hi,

I believe that we're missing some new members as the site does appear a little out-dated. I agree with Tim that For Sale & Care Sheets need to appear more readily accessible via the main forum and that we should be consolidation a number of sub-sections. A single "in Memorium" is adequate. Remove Idle Chatter & use Non-Rep Discussion. Combine the two viv sections and pare down the Reptile Forum section.
I disagree about cobining snakes and dragons but think we can consolidate some of the beardie items (I'll have a further look at this).
One last item (for now anyway) add a "spell check" Tim how could you forget this :!:

I use a modern browser that has one integrated. Don't you? :P

I didn't mean to combine the snake and dragon sections into a single forum (was that what you meant?) but just to end up with one forum titled 'Snakes' and another titled 'Bearded Dragons'. Having posts spread out into half a dozen fora each makes searching for relevant information harder.

Thanks for the input guys, the cockroach issue has been easily rectified. I'll take everything on board and see what we can do.

The forums may well be updated in the early hours of this weekend, the first update.

My error, however I still prefer to see say 3 sub-fora in the dragons.

General Health & Welfare
Breeding
My Beardie

Viv set up and pictures then become a general item as ideas can be used for all reps.

We're OK with spell checkers etc. (most of the time) however we do get the occasional one where it is needed

Thanks, but I did only mean that as an example - other words also get caught in the filter, like ***. Maybe it would be better to just remove the word filter and make swearing against the rules?

Thanks, I'm looking forward to it.

Sounds good to me.

It might also be a good idea to merge the Arachnid forum with the new Exotic Pets forum.

That's a great idea. I would imagine a lot of people who have posted here in the past have simply forgotten about us, and this update provides an excellent excuse to 'remind' them.

Well I am not trying to cause fights here but it's not a forum where you got a great atmosphere.. It looks empty when you register and for the amount of members that you guys got you'd expect lots more replies to topics is in desperate need of some more active members 8)
